Telindus and Harland and Wolff win at Techworld Awards 2008

21st century surveillance system declared Security Project of the Year

Odiham, UK – 17 June, 2008 – Telindus, the network integration specialist, has today announced that its state-of-the-art surveillance system for Belfast-based Harland and Wolff Heavy Industries Limited has been named the ‘Security Project of the Year’ at the Techworld Awards 2008.

Previously known as the Network Awards and running for more than 13 years, the Techworld Awards recognise and reward the products and users from the European IT industry that have made a significant difference over the course of the year, and help IT professionals fulfil their daily roles.

Operating one of the world’s largest dry docks in the world, Harland and Wolff required a 21st Century surveillance system that complied with the latest port security regulations and enabled staff to monitor the organisation’s 90 acres from anywhere on the network, at anytime. Customers also wanted to ensure that a state-of-the-art CCTV system was in place before bringing their vessels to the dry dock.

In order to meet Harland and Wolff’s requirements, Telindus replaced the organisation’s legacy surveillance system with a new CCTV infrastructure connecting  39 cameras across the two dry docks and the ship repair site, as well as the main yard and internal and perimeter floodlighting towers with fibre, wireless and xDSL connections. As a result of the new IP system, staff can now access images from anywhere on or off site and surveillance cameras can be utilised for business as well as security purposes.

Mark Hutchinson, Managing Director at Telindus UK and Ireland, commented: “We are delighted to have won this award with Harland and Wolff. This project really is evidence of how innovative technology can be deployed as both a security and business tool. Harland and Wolff’s new surveillance system is both flexible and future-proof and, as well as complying to the required security legislations, it has been used to make the business more effective.”

Robert McIlwaine, Group IT Executive, Harland and Wolff, said: “This award recognises all of the hard work that the members of the Telindus and Harland and Wolff teams have put into this project from start to finish. The new infrastructure has given us a competitive edge, proving our dedication to achieving the highest level of health, safety and security measures. Due to its complete flexibility, the deployment has transformed the way in which our staff work and it can be expanded as and when increased security measures or new business applications are required.”

Maxwell Cooter, editor of Techworld, said: "There was a lot of interest in this particular award, reflecting the importance of security projects to most CIOs. Harland and Wolff placed a high premium on security, especially its network of CCTVs which were proving to be expensive to maintain. Telindus developed an implementation that mixed and matched old equipment with new; cut costs and delivered a robust surveillance system, within budget and ahead of time. It was this mixture of technical nous and project management skill that impressed the judges.”
