Building intelligent networks to combat the asymmetric threat

Odiham, UK – 11 September, 2007: The military’s role has evolved beyond the traditional borders of defence. Today, national defence organisations provide effective incident response to: natural disasters, terrorism (in both the online and physical environments), accidents, ethnic or religious conflicts, all demonstrating how collaboration plays an important part in the wider international defence community.  Technology is at the very heart of the collaborative defence network, and leading networking specialist and systems integrator, Telindus, is driving next-generation solutions designed to help military forces adapt to 21st Century warfare.

Combined defence operations depend on network-centric applications automating the different stages of the C4ISR procedure, but can be impacted by external influences (such as incidents, threats and political change).  These influences impact the security measures and network services applications are linked to, which can lead to immediate changes being necessary to ensure network integrity and effectiveness in an operational environment.

“The traditional view of the military is outdated,” said Paul Birdman, Defence & Public Sector Specialist at Telindus.  “National military forces co-exist with each other, as is apparent by current international deployments, and with the evolving threat posed by terror groups and radical organisations, the way the military operates has evolved exponentially.  Information is the lifeblood of the modern world, and the armed forces need to ensure that they can maximise every information source in a fast, flexible and secure manner.”

Working with, for example, NATO, Telindus delivers a cross-border portfolio of solutions that allow for total network integrity and effective operational deployment.  Telindus’ portfolio spans:

  • Cyber Defence – there are countless potential network vulnerabilities that can be exploited by factions that want to interrupt global communications or degrade defence infrastructures.  Telindus provides organisations with a ‘cradle to grave’ solution, encompassing risk assessment, network design, ongoing system analysis, forensics services etc. to ensure that critical network resources are protected from attack and down-time
  • Video Networking & Surveillance – with the ability to be integrated into mobile, static and multi-terrain environments, Telindus’ video networking units operate over local IP networks or secure satellite links.
  • Collaboration – technology is a key factor for the real-time collaboration between different defence and civil organisations in an international environment.  Leveraging its Unified Communications (UC) heritage, Telindus can offer end-to-end high def multimedia environments based on advanced voice, data and video technology.  It includes, web-portals, instant messaging, email, digital TV and more.
  • Naval Communications – in order to guarantee effective ship-to-shore communication, Telindus assures a common integrated communication including the secure transmission of all voice, data and video traffic.
  • Deployable & Mobile Networking – wireless networks offer a solution that delivers information in a dynamic, flexible form.  Recognising the potential security implications, Telindus’ wireless infrastructure is designed to deliver secure information on the edge of networks, allowing all types of wireless communication in the field
“In the ‘old days’, soldiers had to retro-fit what they could lay their hands on to make operational duties more effective, but today they are being equipped with the latest and best equipment available.  The modern theatre of operations resides in cyber-space, and we are dedicated to equipping our forces with the very latest technology to help them succeed,” added Birdman.

Supporting its commitment to delivering next-generation solutions that cater for the multi-national defence organisation, Telindus has appointed Mark Taylor as Client Manager – Defence.  At Telindus, he will be responsible for overseeing all of the company’s offerings and liaising with the armed forces directly to identify new solution areas.

Taylor brings over 24 years’ experience in the armed forces to Telindus.  Prior to his new role, he was responsible for all Defence Communications Service Agency (DCSA) stakeholders, and was involved in the exchange of services with the US Defence Information Services Agency.  He was also instrumental in overhauling connectivity to Gibraltar and the US, delivering a 60 per cent increase in bandwidth to Gibraltar and a factor of 25 to the US.  Before the DCSA, Taylor managed all V/UHF communications for the Royal Navy, including Air Traffic Control Systems, while acting as the Navy’s representative at the MoD’s Communications Contingency Planning meetings.
