Maximising the performance of an application over the WAN is a challenging task because many applications have not been natively designed to run on WANs. This is due in no small part to non-critical traffic, which continues to grow like wildfire, affecting the performance of critical applications, while the untested mix of applications on the network means they behave erratically and continually compete for bandwidth.
WANs are “living” infrastructures subject to constant changes and isolating network application performance problems is extremely difficult. Adding more bandwidth to improve application performance often won’t solve the problem and, in the long term, is uneconomic.
