The Return of the Network Service Provider
At the height of the dotcom boom the industry mantra was “Build It and They Will Come”. Investment paused in the wake of the dotcom crash but traffic growth continued almost unabated. Growth continues and recent years have seen the emergence of a new breed of applications and services which suggest a more appropriate mantra of -“They Will Come and Build It”.
The wired infrastructure has long provided the capability to deliver information and services to a user based on log-in credentials and the location of the desktop device they are using. Within the office environment when a user logs into a workstation, local printers, fax machines and file servers are automatically mapped to that device so that the user experience is bespoke to the static, unchanging environment in which they will be working.
