Data centre networks ready for the challenges of cloud-based service delivery

Historically data centre networks carried client-server traffic between application servers and users. However, because of server virtualisation and service-oriented architectures, up to 75% of data centre traffic is now between servers that are now running multiple applications within virtual machines. This has increased typical server traffic by up to 25 times and server interface speeds from 100Mbps to 1Gbps and 10Gbps.

As data centres increasingly become home to Cloud services, virtualisation is being used to support the Cloud’s ‘on demand’ flexibility by allowing services to be rapidly deployed, moved and shut down as required. In order to support this degree of flexibility it is necessary to move entire virtual machines between racks and even between data centres.
